Why we love chinoiserieCollect
Well, not just us, but most designers love chinoiserie. But why?
First, what is chinoiserie? It’s a French word for the European interpretation and imitation of Chinese motifs and and techniques in Western art, furniture, and architecture. Flip through most any design magazine old and present day and you are sure to the influence of Asian culture.
The style originated in 17th century during the European trade with China and other Eastern Asia countries. Europeans were immediately intrigued with their discoveries from this “exotic” Asian culture and began imitating and producing their own take on these highly regarded motifs. From foo dogs to nature scenes, Europe feel in love with all it! And now you also know why Europeans just love their tea. It’s hard to decide what they love more, tea or chinoiserie!
Anywho, you’d be hard pressed to find a designer who doesn’t embrace chinoiserie in their designs. Designers love how it goes with any style and every look. You can bring a piece of chinoiserie, ceramic, textile, furnishing, lighting, art, or wallpaper to any room. From traditional to modern…it’s timeless.
